Prince Language

June 22, 2024

Looking back at June 22, 2024, we still feel the energy from that unforgettable night—
when we proudly welcomed a notorious NY dance music cult-hero to The Basement pulpit:
the unparalleled PRINCE LANGUAGE.

Born and raised in Chicago long before the internet era, he immersed himself in a steady cascade of cassette mixtapes—featuring house and disco legends like Ron Hardy and the Hot Mix 5—alongside a full palette of classic hip-hop, soul, rare groove, and jazz.

With these deep and diverse roots, PRINCE LANGUAGE eventually migrated to New York City, leaving an undeniable imprint on the scene. As he refined the PL production style, his signature remixes were sought after by indie-dance icons like LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, The Rapture, Azari & III, and housemaster Armand Van Helden.

But it was through his prolific edits of dancefloor obscurities—released on the Editions Disco label—that his influence truly soared, landing his records in the crates of legends like David Mancuso, DJ Harvey, Carl Craig, James Murphy, and Gilles Peterson.

His reputation carried him across the globe, delivering deeply curated, dynamic sets to discerning dancefloors. And yet, he carved out a legacy all his own in New York—hosting a show on The Lot Radio and holding down residencies at the city’s most revered dance spaces.

We were beyond thrilled to bring him back to Los Angeles in proper Basement fashion.
That night, the room pulsed with a spirit that still lingers in our memories—
a true highlight in our ongoing history of extraordinary musical moments.
