About the event

Saturday, September 26th

On every occasion that your esteemed Basement hosts have had the pleasure of hearing our next guest play in the wild of night, we have been headily stunned by her inherent ability to lock a dance floor in thriving step…

And on September 26th, we invite LAURA LYNN to the soul pulpit of our LA hometown church.

LAURA LYNN is a New York-based DJ and producer whose raw talent and refined energy have taken her across the continents; sharing stages with Crazy P, Purple Disco Machine, Demi Riquisimo, Cut/Copy and Joyce Muniz, amongst numerous distinctive acts.

Her sound lives in the vibrant intersections of house, disco, indie dance and electro—and she coaxes a hypnotic and elevated floor from her own subtle grip on the ethereal magic of rhythm.

She has released an offering of disco-inflected edits with longtime collaborator Jesse Gay for the Soul Clap Records imprint, and her first original studio production with Jesse is out now with the highly-revered Rebirth Records.

But all that to boot, LAURA LYNN has been diligently focused on nurturing New York’s Hudson Valley and its burgeoning electronic music scene. She is the founder of a resounding mid-winter party, aptly titled “Disco Chalet”—a vintage après-ski discotheque that has hosted the incomparable legends of dance music: Heidi Lawden, Lovefingers, Justin Strauss, Eli from Soul Clap, Midnight Magic, and the one and only Greg Wilson.

The only aspect that supersedes her excellent taste in music is her pure and forthright dynamism and focus, which is unwaveringly locked in the groove…

But before Laura takes us into the late hours, we have another story to tell.

Some considerable miles away from our little Los Angeles basement, in the heat and beautiful commotion of Saigon, we first encountered YOKOSUN from exactly where we like to discover a DJ: the dancefloor.

Behind the decks at The Observatory, one of Vietnam’s most vital homes for underground music, we heard a DJ with a remarkably wide musical reach—and an instinct for moving through it all with an ease that immediately caught our ears.

We remembered her.

Japanese-born and now based in Saigon, YOKOSUN has quietly become one of the leading DJs in Vietnam’s dance music community and a resident at The Observatory. Since first stepping into the booth in 2020, she has developed a wonderfully free and inquisitive approach to playing—wandering through jazz-tinged grooves, disco curiosities, bouncing house and wherever else the room might invite her.

There is a lightness to the way she plays, but don't mistake that for a lack of intent.

Yokosun listens.

She watches the small shifts in a room, lets records breathe and, rather than wrestling a dancefloor into submission, seems quite content to gently seduce it into following her. That instinct has carried her from Saigon to Klymax in Bali, Zodiac in Jakarta, Mitsuki in Tokyo and Rainbow Disco Club in Goa and Ho Chi Minh City.

And ever since that first encounter in Vietnam, we've had a sneaking suspicion that her particular way of playing might feel rather lovely down here.

So we finally did something about it.

YOKOSUN will set our September evening into motion, before LAURA LYNN takes the reins and sees just how far into the night we're willing to follow.

We are ever so excited to bring them to our sanctified floor for your listening pleasure.

So come join us for another special episode at the Basement on the last Saturday of September and let’s bring the summer to its loving knees.
